Marin Headlands’ ‘Five-Minute Tunnel’ gets rehab work

Published Friday March 10

By Mark Prado, Marin Independent Journal

As traffic zooms overhead on the Waldo Grade along Hwy 101, workers are busily fixing a century-old tunnel that takes people to open spaces and the Pacific Ocean, far removed from urban life in pace, if not space.

The half-mile-long Baker-Barry Tunnel — also known as the “Five-Minute Tunnel” — in the Marin Headlands is the one-way tube that takes people to Rodeo Beach and valley, the Marine Mammal Center and Capehart housing.

It has been closed since Jan to undergo up to $7 mill. in repairs to keep the old military tunnel functioning.

“The worst winter in 25 years is fine for us,” Coffey stated with a smile.

Article length: About 620 words.
