Storm-damaged Sir Francis Drake Boulevard studied after two mudslide closures

Published Friday March 10

After mudslides closed down Sir Francis Drake Blvd. west of Fairfax twice this week, it could cost at least $800,000 for a long-term fix to prevent future slides, according to preliminary estimates.

County engineers are busy assessing the White’s Hill area at Baywood Canyon Road, checking soil stability, tree conditions — including roots systems — and saturation issues along the hillside ridge. But some of the storm-damaged area is private house and the topography makes it complicated to assess.

The closure upset morning commuters who were sent on detours through Nicasio Valley and Lucas Valley roads, where cars were backed up throughout the rush hour.
